This 5x7 standing frame is built from 5/4 fumed quarter-sawn white oak, sized for portraits, small prints, and historical photos on a desk, mantel, or shelf.

Design & Traditional Joinery
The design draws on classic Arts and Crafts proportions, combining Stickley-style lines with hand-shaped Greene and Greene inspired details. Each frame is built using hand-fitted mortise and tenon joinery assembled with traditional hot hide glue for a permanent mechanical bond. Hand-shaped black walnut accent buttons are recessed into the corners, providing structural detail and subtle visual contrast.
Surface Prep & Ammonia Fuming
Hand-Scraped Finish: Surface prep is completed using bench planes and cabinet scrapers rather than power sanders. Slicing the wood fibres cleanly leaves the medullary ray fleck in the white oak crisp and sharp.
Chemical Fuming: Rather than using surface stains, the deep brown colour is achieved through traditional ammonia fuming. Ammonia reacts directly with the natural tannins in the timber, causing the wood tone to shift under different lighting conditions. Any sapwood is pre-treated with tea tannins and dye so it reacts evenly alongside the heartwood.
Finish: Sealed with clear dewaxed shellac and finished with hand-rubbed natural beeswax for a non-toxic, low-lustre protective layer.
Backing, Stand & Hardware
Solid Hardwood Backing: Features a solid Cherry or Ash back panel rather than plywood, allowing the wood to expand and contract naturally while offering a clean visual contrast from the rear.
Support Strut: The back features a solid fumed oak support strut with a traditional four-square cutout, mounted with solid brass hardware. It supports both portrait and landscape orientation.
Suede Leather Stay: A genuine suede strap holds the strut at a fixed display angle, replacing noisy metal support chains.
Included Glazing & Archival Materials
Every frame ships complete with:
UV-resistant glass to protect prints from light exposure.
Two acid-free archival mat boards (one White, one Black).
Custom Sizing & Rebate Depth
The rear rebate depth can be adjusted during milling to accommodate thicker paper stock, textured artwork, or non-standard document mounting. Contact the workshop prior to ordering to discuss custom depth requirements.
