Handcrafted Mission Style Arts & Crafts Wall Frame (5x7)

This 3/4 inch profile wall frame is built using traditional exposed joinery, designed for prints, photos, and artwork in Arts and Crafts or modern interiors. Available in Quartersawn White Oak, Black Walnut, Cherry, and Ash.

Joinery and Design Rather than mitred corners or staples, each frame is constructed with hand-fitted through-bridle joints. The tenons extend slightly past the outer frame edges and are hand-pillowed, creating structural shadow lines at the corners.

Surface Preparation and Finishing

• Hand-Scraped Finish: Surface preparation is completed using bench planes and a cabinet scraper rather than power sanders. Scraped wood fibres leave the medullary rays sharp and clear.

• Ammonia Fuming (White Oak option): The deep brown colour on white oak variants is achieved through traditional ammonia fuming. Ammonia reacts directly with natural tannins in the wood, causing the tone to shift under different lighting conditions. Sapwood is pre-treated with natural tea tannins and aniline dye to react evenly alongside the heartwood. Walnut, cherry, and ash display their natural timber tones.

• Assembly and Finish: Joined with traditional hot hide glue and sealed with hand-rubbed natural shellac and beeswax for a protective finish.

Backing and Hardware

• Back Panel: Features a stable plywood back panel for secure framing.

• Hardware: Fitted with metal turn buttons.

• Included Accessories: Ships with UV-resistant glass and two acid-free mat boards in white and black.

• Footprint Note: Because the pillowed bridle joints extend beyond the corners, the total exterior width and height are approximately 1/2 inch larger than standard flush-corner frames. Account for this extra margin when planning your wall space.
